Dog steps or a dog ramp?

Both can give a dog a route into the boot without jumping. The useful choice depends on your dog, the height of the boot and the space you have behind the car.

Watch how your dog moves.

A dog ramp offers a continuous slope. Steps offer separate, level treads. Some dogs are familiar with stairs; others are more comfortable on a gradual slope. Try the movement with your dog before deciding.

A longer ramp can reduce the slope, but needs more clear ground behind the vehicle. With steps, check the first-step height, tread space and the dog's ability to move between treads. Neither design suits every dog.

For a dog with pain, restricted movement or a recent operation, ask your vet or canine physiotherapist which movement is appropriate. Dog Steps are an access product, not a treatment.

Measure the space behind the car.

Open the boot where you normally park. Allow for the rear door or tailgate, the access product, your dog approaching it and room for you to stand beside them. Check uneven ground and a second parking space too.

Dog&Drive steps fold and swivel into the boot. A separate dog ramp needs somewhere to travel when it is not in use. Compare the complete routine, including putting it away while managing your dog.

Check mounting and boot space.

Dog&Drive Dog Steps use a vehicle-specific mounting frame secured to the boot's existing lashing points. No drilling or permanent modification is needed. The system fixes in for use and can be removed without tools.

The folded system is under 20 cm thick. The frame and folded steps still use boot space, so consider luggage, a cushion, crates and any other equipment together. We review the boot opening before manufacture.

If comparing a dog ramp, check its manufacturer's instructions for how it attaches to your car and how it is secured during travel.

Choose the system for the vehicle.

A vehicle with a lower tailgate section may need a Pull-Out System to position the steps beyond it. A side-hinged rear door is a different arrangement. Our vehicle selector checks the recorded route for your make, model and year.

Introduce it at your dog's pace.

Set up on firm, level ground, following the supplied instructions. Let your dog investigate before asking them to use it. Use short, calm sessions and reward voluntary steps. Avoid pulling, forcing or rushing a hesitant dog.

Check the installation and walking surface each time. If your dog struggles, stop and ask for help rather than repeatedly asking them to attempt the movement.

Let us check your vehicle.

Tell us the make, model and year, and show us the boot opening. We will help specify the right system and review the fit before manufacture.
