Fitting your Dog Steps.
Your Dog Steps frame arrives configured for your vehicle. Secure it to the existing lashing points in the boot using the supplied straps.
Follow the fitting instructions supplied with your system. The steps below provide a general guide you can refer to while fitting.
Fitting sequence
Check what arrived
The step system in your chosen width, the mounting frame configured for your vehicle, tensioning straps and the fitting instructions. Tell us straight away if anything is missing or shows transit damage.
Clear the boot
Take everything out of the boot, including any loose liner or floor mat that sits over the lashing points. You need clear access to all four eyes.
Position the frame
Place the frame in the boot position recorded on your order (left, centre or right), with the handle on the right unless your Defender order records the left-hand option. Directions are viewed standing behind the vehicle and looking in. The frame is etched for your vehicle; the etched face goes to the rear.
Tension the straps
Attach the straps to the lashing points and tension them evenly. The frame should sit flat and not shift when pushed firmly by hand. Re-check the tension after the first few uses; straps settle.
Check the opening and latches
Open and fold the steps a few times yourself. Check the support foot swings out as the steps unfold and that the latches re-engage when you fold them back. Then let your dog try it, on the lead, on level ground.
Before every journey
Fold the steps back and check they are latched before you drive.
Before using the steps.
- Use the steps only while the vehicle is stationary, on ground that is as level as you can find.
- Supervise your dog while they climb. The tread is anti-slip, not non-slip.
- Maximum supported dog weight is 70 kg.
- Fold the steps back and check they are latched before you drive.

A frame that will not sit flat, straps that will not tension evenly, a handle that feels stiff or latches that do not re-engage cleanly are all things to report rather than adjust or lubricate yourself. Photographs of the system in the vehicle usually let us diagnose it in one reply.
